Schools with Bachelor s Degrees in Pharmacy: How to Choose

Students interested in becoming licensed pharmacists should pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) degree. A Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science (BSPS) program prepares students for work in the pharmaceutical industry, but graduates of this program are not eligible to become pharmacists. The BSPS can prepare students for graduate studies, but it’s not always required for a Pharm.D.

A bachelor’s degree in pharmacy can open the door for students seeking a career as a pharmacy technician, or as a step towards a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Either way, students interested in this program learn the fundamental skills required to work in the medical field in regard to medication.

  • Most schools will only accept students into a pharmaceutical program after satisfactory completion of prerequisite courses.
  • Internship opportunities are often available and can be incredibly valuable in gaining experience and finding employment.
  • Students may want to look at research opportunities and the research interests of a program’s faculty to find a good match for their interests.

A BSPS prepares students for work in pharmaceutical sales, marketing, research and development, management, administration and regulations. This degree can also serve as a stepping stone to higher-level education, such as a Pharm.D., but it may also lead to graduate programs in veterinary medicine, dentistry, optometry and medicine. Programs often include research, internship and cooperative work experience opportunities.

A bachelor’s degree program in pharmacy is offered at private and public institutions to prepare students for their future careers or graduate studies in the field. Students should consider things like program specializations and internship opportunities when selecting a school to attend.
