#MIPSart: Pop-art meets routine science by MMitchell McInerney. Optimising antibody concentrations for immunocytochemistry experiments is a fairly dull, yet totally necessary process within the life sciences. When however, the images produced are joined at the seams to form one continuous panel, something vaguely akin to Warhol s pop art emerges. But rather than the iconic images of Marilyn Monroe or John Lennon, it is the sturdy cells of the human brain micro-vasculature which serve as the focal point in this piece. To create this image, stains were applied to both the cell nuclei (blue) and a structural protein known as β-catenin (green). The β-catenin stain was applied at various levels of dilution to present the viewer with a range of light intensities. #ScienceAsArt #Art #Warhol #PopArt #antibody #lifesciences #cell
